WITTMAN TAILWIND WO – N37SW

Very little is known about Steve Wittman’s Tailwind WO, although the WO was similar to the W-10. Steve made the plans available for his W-10 design, but the specifications differ slightly from his original WO. He built the WO in 1974 and initially installed an Oldsmobile engine, which he changed in 1978 to an Oldsmobile F-85 engine.

Steve’s logbooks show that he flew the airplane on many local Wisconsin trips as well as cross- country to California in 1976. In 1977, he took aviation photographer Aaron King up for a ride. During January of 1978, Steve had to make a forced landing in his WO, touching down in a tomato field near Homestead, Florida. There were no injuries from the incident, but the WO suffered enough damage that it had to be trucked back to Steve’s home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Steve continued to fly his WO through 1993.

In 1995, L. Anderson, A. Swindler, and H. Brey donated the Tailwind WO to the EAA AirVenture Museum.
