2009 Good Ol’ Days
August 29 & 30th
- EAA’s annual living history weekend, Good Ol’ Days, was recently held at Pioneer Airport. Activities included hand propping, a drawing for a ride in the 1929 Travel Air bi-plane, a pie-eating contest and the many games and crafts available in the Family Activity hangar. Another favorite of the visitors was the “opening” of the time capsule. Children and adults were fascinated with the items used during the 1930’s. Visitors were also treated to a 1924 Fire truck and vintage cars on display. A special feature during the 2009 event was the appearance of the PA18 Autogiro. During the event the owner, crew and pilot of the PA 18 were available to answer questions from guests about this unique aircraft.

June 20
-The EAA's seventh annual Wings on Strings Kite Festival was blessed with great breezes and enthusiastic crowds. Giant kites such as the octopus flew to the delight of the crowd. The “Kid’s Mad Dash" filled the skies above EAA's Pioneer Airport with a hundred free kites donated by Gift of Wings, one of the event co sponsors. The Chicago Fire kite team that has been together since 1986 performed once again this year, amazing the crowd with their spectacular feats.

Younger children had a great time “flying” the pedal planes and designing their own special aviator goggles. The Eagle Hangar was filled with modelers and R/C airplanes. Guests were treated to flying demonstrations of rubber-powered model airplanes, radio-controlled models and a huge flying blimp.
